Diary of an Extreme Cowgirl

Every cowgirl has an Extreme Story. So What's Yours?

I am working on many updates. I apologize for being MIA.
I had a very tragic event, Feb 2009, and I seemed to shut down with writers block.

Follow along as I dust myself off after being paralyzed from a broken neck.

Saddle was stolen last night, August 21, 2007 in the Concord, CA area.

Car was broken into and saddle was stolen.

Please keep an eye out on Craigslist, Ebay, and local tack sales. $100 reward give towards the recovery of the saddle.

It has extreme sentimental value.

Description: Big Horn Saddle, Raw hide horn with silver on top, small gouge in the silver and cut in the raw hide with a little green paint.

Plate on the side of saddle says "Big Horn".

Extreme Ranch Trials August 18, 2007

Posted by Extreme_Cowgirl

We did it!
Bowen had his very first ever show and ride away from home, and he dealt with brand new things like a giant titer totter!

He picked things up fast and worked through his uneasiness pretty fast.

I was pleasantly surprised how fast he got on the titer totter.

the water pit was great, he actually went in when I asked him to while under saddle, but he rushed through it so I wanted to walk him in and stop him in the middle.

I was going to go get my other clothes so I could change. One of his owners said "No I don't mind walking in there"

So Bowens dad took him for a walk through the water, and Bowen discovered he likes to play in the water Lol..

He even thought about getting down and rolling with me on in the water at one point Lol.

there was a low tarp between 2 building that I was not too happy with. I just think it was too low, if I had come up against that on the trail I would have gotten down but this it the extreme ranch trials.

We do need to work on actually jumping over jumps and barrels, and not just try to walk over them Lil.. that first set of barrels he thought we could walk over Lol.

he wanted to run down the small stairs, he is definitely getting the hang of this

Look out extreme cowboy, here we come!

Thy evil plastic bags

Posted by Extreme_Cowgirl

Well he again did great on everything..

The plastic walk over was an issue but he over came it. And walks over it like a pro.

He is learning so fast and performing so well I will give him the day off tomorrow.

The Extreme Ranch Trails are Saturday so I will ride one last time on Friday. Then off the the competition Saturday morning. I will video and will try and get photos too.

I won't know if I am chosen for the RFD-TV "Extreme Cowboy" until September 4th.

So until then I will train as if I am on the show again. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Oh my! A Bridge

Posted by Extreme_Cowgirl

Finally after over a week, he figured out that we walk on the bridge not over it lol.

The small bridge we have here is for the in hand yearling trail horses. So it is pretty narrow, but long. Silly Bowen thought it was to step over width wise and not walk on it. But I pick my battles and knew he would figure it out eventually. And today he did.

We also set up some new things because bowen is getting really good at climbing up and down hills, over small ditches and walking over tarps.

The new things are:

Plastic shaving bags held down by boards to make a walk over that makes noise.
Plastic logs that are about 4ft long and 6 in in diameter.
Cones to weave
And a jump pole set at about 15 in

He was able to all after a few try's except number 1.

I walked him around it for a good 2o min and then he decided it was not a hole to china and walk across. That being a bit victory we did it at least 5 more times just walking and we ended the day.

I will ride him over it tomorrow.

Mastering the Gate

Posted by Extreme_Cowgirl

well maybe not mastering but learning it. He is side passing enough to open and close gates pretty well.
It would help though to have a gate that was made to be opened and closed from horseback lol, But it adds to the chalange.
He is mastering climing up hills, from small to farley steep. Not too steep that I can't climb it myself.
Now going down is another story lol. He will climb down in some areas but not others, he seems to like the more difficult ones lol.. Silly boy.

Rode the hill

Posted by Extreme_Cowgirl

Yep we rode down the steep hill with little hesitation.
very good boy.
we also rode up and down the dirt mound, over the bridge and tarps as well as up the steep side of the manure pile.

Now why would I be riding over the manure pile when it is not hard packed ?
Well good question. I normally wouldn't be doing that but for the extreme cowboy race they do have loose packed mounds. I had to deal with 4 of then leading to other obstacles in season 3, so I am preparing him.

He is a very fast learner. I think we will enter in the Extreme Trail competition here in Clements, CA. Great way to practice for the Show.

First day of training

Posted by Extreme_Cowgirl

well here we go. First day of official trail training.
We made the video and bowen did great for a horse that has never been asked to do anything like this.

He only needed to be walked through something once and he would try it while ridden.
You can see the wheels turning in his head, a very smart horse.

Today we worked on getting to know each other a bit better in the arena.
He has the most compact lope, we see if he can extend that a bit :)

Then I did want to ride him over the strange obstacles so I walked him all over. Yes I figure if I want him to do I should be able to as well lol.

So we walked down the steep hill, over the tarps, up and down the dirt mound, over the manure pile, over the little ditch and over the very little wooded bridge (made for the in hand trail yearling).

He did great. I on the other hand slipped a bit :)

Sorry it took so long to make the video.
I was hoping to film an extreme trail compitition but things got so busy I could do it.

I did how ever win Battle of the Barns!!!!
on a different horse though.

so here is the video I sent in.
I was only able to use the video of us going trail stuff for the first time.
He has never done anything out side the arena.
